Spring Reflections: conscientious objectors, herons, and a lot of community events to look forward to

Updates!
The maple sap is running, and about to stop since everywhere I walk I see maple flowers peaking out. It’s time for maple trees to divert their energy to making leaves. I had a decent sap run this year with the tree in the front of my house on the boulevard. Yummy.
Baby squirrels are being born, herons are returning, and I’ve seen my first daffodils in the warm spot by my house. Dandelions should appear next week or so. It is indeed spring, and despite this, the grey weather and weight of the wars being waged on our communities, has most people I know feeling pretty down.
A bit of uplifting news, the Center on Conscience and War (CCW) has recorded a 1,000 percent increase in new conscientious objector clients since the US-Israeli military strikes against Iran began on February 28th 2026. Please feel into what this means, people within the military are wanting out. Pay attention to the tides as they shift, and feel some of this somatically if you can.
I am going to tell all of you to try and plan a little vacation for yourselves this month. It has been a hard winter for those of us in Minnesota. Can you get yourself a little state park cabin (support our state parks!), take yourself on a day trip to Afton State Park, Como Conservatory, Eloise Butler, or start growing seeds that you want to plant for a little pick me up? If you can plan a little get away, please do. If you can’t, how about making yourself cozy and cuddle up with some of these questions I was asked at the seder I attended two days ago.
What have you learned from the land this year?
What has broken your heart this year?
What have you learned from your relationship with the divine this year?
What have you learned from your relationship with yourself this year?
What have you learned from your relationship with each other and our communities?
Before you know it, summer will be here, so use the last of these grey days to plan out your summer, make art, write poetry, and prepare for the chaos that will be summer before you know it. You have April, May, and when June hits, you know what happens.
