Song of the Week
Listen to this song as you read to help open you up. Like Real People Do by Hozier. This is a song from the perspective of a bog person who has been dug out by his lover.
Updates!
I found a piece of land to possibly take folks tree climbing in Wisconsin. It’s full of maples and oaks, about an hour from Minneapolis. I still have more exploration to do, but it’s a promising lead. Stay tuned and cross your fingers for me.
While I was on a hike in northern Minnesota last weekend I found some lobster, russula, lots of coral mushrooms.
Lobster mushrooms are amazing because they are born from another mushroom, either russula or lactarius. They slowly transform the host’s cells by tinkering with the host’s cellular machinery, replacing the host’s DNA, with it’s own. The articles I read online describe this process as a kind of zombie take over, which reminds me, I did have a scary but also hilarious zombie dream a week before I found these. Perhaps a mushroom premonition? My body remembering what season we are entering? Perhaps both. Back to lobsters, at the end of this complete shift in the cellular structure and composition of the host mushroom, the new mushroom has an entirely new shape, texture and flavor. Lobster mushrooms are reminiscent of seafood. When I’ve eaten the edible forms of russula, they have also tasted of the ocean, but are completely different in every other way.
Also of note, last weekend I found some porcini mushrooms. It reminded me of when I found porcini’s almost two years ago about 30 miles from where I found them last time. I have included the poem I wrote then about the excitement of finding porcinis, and the heartache and horror of witnessing what was happening in Palestine and Israel. I’m glad the resistance to this genocide is still going strong in the Twin Cities.
I went to the Yalla Drum Ensemble event yesterday hosted by the New Arab American Theatre Works and it was wonderful to be surrounded by so many wonderful humans. Below is my poem/reflections, I hope it helps you resist more, and love harder.
