Go Getters: Manifest What You Know To Be True

Updates!

This week I am thinking about going after what you want. I am very excited that I received the Minnesota State Art’s Board Creative Individuals Grant! In a nutshell, it’s $10,000 to complete my series String Theory which will have a total of 360 different knots (need to learn 135 more to complete my goal) I’ve learned over the past three years, create an exhibit, artist talk, and a series of art therapy spaces for Minnesotans. I’m going to start planning my art therapy workshops this week. I’m so excited!

When I wrote this grant though, I was so tired. I knew I had a chance at getting it, but the idea of getting rejected after spending so much time writing the application, felt disparaging. I didn’t think I was going to get it after having gotten rejected from two grants I poured my heart into and thought I was well-suited for. I was feeling unmotivated to learn knots, as I’ve learned all the easier ones and the new knots are more complex and take more time to learn. While grants aren’t a sustainable way to support an art practice, they are wonderful infusions that help get artists on higher, more solid ground. Winter is my knot-tying season, and it’s so nice to have some funding to pursue my creative expression, love of fiber art, and leading group art therapy.

This week was another week that helped add Vitamin D and fluid to my spine and backbones. Inviting a Palestinian doctor to speak about healthcare and culture in Palestine as part of the Asian Collective last year turned out to be one of the most exhausting and important things I’ve ever done in a work context. Truthout released an article on Tuesday covering censorship, retaliation, and discrimination myself and other healthcare workers interviewed experienced when supporting our Palestinian colleagues. I continue to think how ridiculous it was that the DEI department in a hospital wouldn’t allow healthcare workers to have a lunch-time conversation about how bombing hospitals impacts public health, and sets a really dangerous precedent for hospitals around the world. The link to the full article is below with excerpts from the two other locals, Dr. Harb, and Asfia Qaadir. Whenever I feel scared about speaking out, I think about the Japanese internment, colonialism my family experienced in Ireland, what I wish other people had done for us, what some people did for us. Then in a matter of seconds, the answer becomes clear, and my fear moves from the forefront of my spirit, into the shadows of my deeper more wise-mind knowings. Learn more about how to recognize anti-Palestinian racism here. Homework for this week if you want: manifest what you know to be true. Tell others what you are manifesting. Say it. Do it. Repeat.

Library Patrons Union: Take Action, Please Sign

Last night, while our coalition packed Minneapolis city hall to speak out against Zen City, we took a separate contingent to the Hennepin Country Ridgedale library to speak out against the recent removal of a book display for international solidarity with the Palestinian people, an observance commemorated by the UN .

The Ridgedale library staff put up a powerful stand of books on Palestine, but after Zionist backlash, Hennepin County Library Administration, Library Board, and County Commissioners forced library staff to take the display down!

https://monarcamn.org/training. FREE. Ive heard these trainings are great. ICE raids are happening everywhere, there was one in St. Paul earlier this week and being a witness and observer is critical at this time. Get trained so you are prepared. See if your neighborhood as a local signal group as well. This is how we can slow things down and help each other. “Months into the Trump administration, we are seeing a growing wave of executive orders and policies aimed at targeting and deporting millions, especially in states like ours. Agencies are showing up in neighborhoods, workplaces, and schools. We are coming together to build power, stand with our neighbors, and shine a light on these injustices.”

About This Event

FREE! Join us for the world premiere of Pedacito de Tierra (Little Piece of Land), a powerful new work that weaves oral histories from the Puerto Rican diaspora in Minnesota into a contemporary chamber music performance.

Led by multi–GRAMMY®-nominated saxophonist José Antonio Zayas Cabán and the {Trés} Chamber Music Trio, with music composed by award-winning composer Angélica Negrón, Pedacito de Tierra layers community voices, electronics, saxophones, and piano to explore belonging, resilience, and cultural memory.

Special guest GRAMMY® award–winning saxophonist Miguel Zenón joins the ensemble to perform additional works, bringing global artistry to a concert rooted in local voices.

The evening begins with a private viewing of the companion exhibit reflecting the themes of migration and identity, featuring oral history clips, photography, and artwork by local artist and organizer Ricardo Levins Morales. The evening will also include a special reading of Daniela y Mateo Viajan a Puerto Rico by Pamela Michelli, a children’s book that brings Puerto Rican culture and landscapes to life for younger audiences. This reading adds another dimension of storytelling to the event, weaving together literature, music, and oral histories. A closing reception with light refreshments offers space to continue the conversation and connect with artists, community members, and fellow attendees.

This premiere event celebrates culture, history, and imagination—bringing together music and storytelling to honor the Puerto Rican community in Minnesota and beyond.

Celebrating the seasons is really important.

FREE workshop funded through the MN State Arts Board. Masks are fun, and they can be used at protests these days for some publicity, and to help ICE agents question their life’s meaning and purpose.
