Embracing the Cracks: Bayo Akomolafe, Eggs, Lebanon, and Iran.

Song of the Week

Listen to this song as you read to help open you up. Could it be we be buying dreams to disguise what we don’t have?

Egg I made with a cool Ukrainian wax technique.

Updates!

Last week I had the opportunity to be a grief tender at an event where Bayo Akomolafe was speaking as a part of a Macalester College and Clouds In Water event series. A lot of what was said, was about the grief and grace in being alive right now, about the new world so many of us are craving, and the emptiness that sometimes comes with what feels like limited options. A theme that's been arising not just at this event, but in the collective is a sense of failure that brushes up against efforts towards perfection. Striving for perfection creates a unrelenting sense of failure. Letting ourselves fail completely, we can experience a kind of release from fear that can feel akin to unconditional “okay-ness”, acceptance, or love. Can you lovingly let yourself fail this week?

I've been grappling with some of that myself as I had to have emergency hand surgery on Wednesday. That's why this newsletter is a little late going out. I move very fast oftentimes and like all surgeries, they force you to reorient to your body in a slow way— in a way that forces you to release a sense of who you are because of what you accomplish and do.

For this week I’d like to share this interview that Bayo gave (link below). I haven't listened to the full episode yet, but it gives you a taste of his vibe and some of the gifts he's sharing with the world that I got to experience at the events I attended.

For fun, I also wanted to share this cool video about eggs for those of you who love birds, eggs, and decorating eggs as any part of your spring traditions. A beloved Sara showed me how to dye eggs with a really neat Ukrainian wax method and it got me nerding out about egg art (link below). Keep up your art practices y’all, art will save us.

Finally, I want to send a love note to all my Iranian, Lebanese, Palestinian, and SWANA loved ones. I love you. I hate what is happening. I love you. Your land and people matter, have always mattered, and will always matter. Please use 5 Calls to contact your reps, and take a moment to pause and feel the grief if you’re someone who hasn’t registered what is happening yet. Keep feeling, and taking care of your hearts and souls this week.

More eggs we made!
